There is a massive financial shock waiting for expats during their first summer in Norway: you might be forced to take unpaid vacation. In this highly detailed episode of Norway Perspectives, Jan Erik Christensen from the NLS Norway Relocation Group explains the complex Norwegian Holiday Pay system known as “Feriepenger.”
Unlike many countries that offer real-time paid time off, Norway funds your summer vacation using money you accrued during the previous calendar year. If you are a new arrival, you haven’t accrued that money yet. Learn exactly how the Feriepenger system works, why the rate varies between 10.2% and 12% depending on your contract, your legal right to refuse unpaid vacation, why mandatory summer company shutdowns (fellesferie) can override that right, and how to negotiate your first-year contract to protect your cash flow.
In this episode, you will learn:
- How the Norwegian “Feriepenger” (Holiday Pay) system actually works.
- The truth about Feriepenger rates (10.2% vs. 12% based on your vacation weeks).
- The first-year trap: Why taking vacation your first summer often means losing your salary.
- Your legal right to refuse unpaid vacation versus the reality of “Fellesferie” (mandatory shutdowns).
- Why your June holiday payout feels “tax-free” (even though it isn’t).
- How to negotiate your relocation package to cover the first-year income gap.
- How NLS Norway Relocation Group it its vetted legal and tax partners helps safeguard your finances before you sign your contract.

Let me tell you about the most unpleasant financial surprise waiting for you during your first summer in Norway.
Speaker A:You finally take July off to enjoy the beautiful fjords and the midnight sun, only to check your bank account and realize your employer has paid you absolutely nothing for the entire month.
Speaker A:Welcome to Norway Perspectives.
Speaker A:Hello, I am Jan Erik Christensen from the NLS Norway Relocation Group.
Speaker A:And today we are talking about the Norwegian holiday pay system known as Fehpenge and a massive first year income gap that catches almost every expat completely off guard.
Speaker A:Norway is famous for its generous annual vacation.
Speaker A:However, what most international hires do not understand is that the Norwegian system does not actually give you paid time off in real time like they do in the US or the uk.
Speaker A:Instead, your summer vacation is funded by Ferifanger, a specific holiday pay that you earned the previous calendar year.
Speaker A:Throughout the year, your employer calculates a percentage of your gross income.
Speaker A:Many expats are incorrectly told this is a flat rate across the board, but it actually depends entirely on your contract.
Speaker A:If you have the statutory legal minimum of four weeks and one day of vacation, the rate is 10.2%.
Speaker A:If you get the standard five weeks, which is the most common in Norway, it jumps to 12%.
Speaker A:And the percentage is even higher if you are over 60 years old.
Speaker A:Then the following summer, usually in June, the company halts your regular salary and pays out this accrued lump sum instead.
Speaker A:This lump sum is meant to cover your living expenses while you take your mandated vacation.
Speaker A:But here is the massive financial trap for newcomers.
Speaker A:If you move to Norway and start working in January or even the previous autumn, you have not accrued a full year of holiday pay in the Norwegian system.
Speaker A:When the company wide holiday payout happens in June, you will only receive the small fraction you manage to accrue, or absolutely nothing at all if you just arrived.
Speaker A:Now, under Norwegian law, you actually have the right to refuse to take vacation if your accrued holiday pay does not cover your loss of income.
Speaker A:However, there is a massive exception to this rule.
Speaker A:If your Norwegian company enforces a mandatory summer shutdown in July, which is known as Fellesvere and is incredibly common across many industries, you will be forced to take time off without any accrued holiday pay to fund it.
Speaker A:You are effectively forced into taking unpaid leave for expats who have just spent hundreds of thousands of kroner relocating, putting down housing deposits and buying winter gear solid.
Speaker A:Suddenly losing a full month of income in July can be financially devastating.
Speaker A:Furthermore, you need to understand the tax implications of Ferie Penge.
Speaker A:While the payout in June feels tax free because there is no withholding tax applied that specific month.
Speaker A:It is actually fully taxable income.
Speaker A:The tax has simply been spread out and deducted slightly heavier across your regular paychecks throughout the year.
Speaker A:To survive this, you have to plan ahead before you even sign your employment contract.
Speaker A:Some progressive employees will allow you to borrow against your future holiday pay, or they might explicitly grant you regular paid leave during your first year as a special inclusion in your relocation package.
Speaker A:But a company will rarely offer this voluntarily.
Speaker A:You have to know to ask for it.
Speaker A:Understanding the complex intricacies of Norwegian labor law and compensation packages is nearly impossible when you are just trying to secure a job.
